Aspen

hello my loyal readers!

I haven't had much to blog about since I haven't been traveling too much lately, but that will pick up again very soon, dont you worry!! I'm currently in Aspen with the family for a week...we've rented a house and are having a great time so far. lots of eating, walking, shopping, hiking, etc. More adventures to come...

Anyway - here is my airport news....Katy (my sister, for those of you not in the know) has to fly back to San Antonio early for school....so we're trying to figure out how to get her back to teh Denver airport... the rest of the family isn't flying out until 2 days after her... so here are the choices.
1. Katy drives the rental car back to the DEN airport and I drive the rest of the family in my car a few days later.
2. Katy takes a van shuttle from Aspen to the DEN airport
3. Katy buys a 1-way airplane ticket from Aspen to DEN.

Those of you who know Katy wont be surprised to hear that she vetoed #2 in about .5 seconds. So she looked online to see how much a 1-way ticket would cost.

Get this:
To buy a 1-way ticket from Aspen to DEN is like 400 dollars. (the plan was that she'd fly to DEN, then pick up her DEN-SAT leg that she'd already booked).

HOWEVER, to buy a 1-way ticket from Aspen-DEN-SAT is $280 (and she'd get a partial credit back for her orig DEN-SAT leg that she would cancel).

Isn't that crazy? Why does that happen? Why is it cheaper to book all the way through to SA? Anyone know?

Sorry for the boring post - my confirmed travel plans in the next few months include....Phoenix, Baltimore, DC, Delaware, Baltimore (again), Switzerland, Chicago, and 3 Trips to San Antonio. I suspect I'll have to add another 1-2 trips each to Phoenix & Delaware in there.... So there you go...my nice relaxing travel-free lifestyle is quickly coming to an end. Sad for me...but ultimately, more exicting for you guys...since i'll have more tales to tell :)

Endless!! You've been missed. And as your resident airline/airport geek, I can explain about Katy's ticket. Airlines like symmetry - roundtrip tickets. Plus they know that if you're buying a one-way ticket, you're desperate. And in that desperation, you'll pay whatever it takes. I know people who have purposely bought a roundtrip because it was cheaper and they just dump the other way.

And here's a bonus -- if Katy had bought that one-way ticket, she would have seen the dreaded SSSS on the bottom of her boarding pass, designating her for extra security screening. Buying a one-way ticket is one of the markers that gets you extra screening, along with numerous itinerary changes, paying in cash and odd city pairs, i.e., going from Phoenix to Boston via Denver, Chicago and Detroit.

So there you have it. And Endless, I work in DC and live in Baltimore. It would be nice to meet for drinks if you have the time when you're in the area. You can reach me directly at benet_wilson@aviationweek.com if you're not to busy.

Enjoy Aspen!!
